De-ice boot cleaning, stripping and sealing

De-ice boots are elastomeric, not painted, and that single fact is the whole service. Chemistry meant for a polyurethane topcoat hardens rubber. Boots cleaned that way crack early, and replacement is not a small number.

Detail

What goes wrong

Boots dry out, harden and crack. That is accelerated by the wrong cleaner, by UV exposure and by de-ice fluid residue left in place. On aircraft based in the northeast or the upper midwest, boots take four or five months a year of hard use and then sit through a summer with the residue still on them.

What we do

Clean with chemistry appropriate to the material, strip where old sealant has failed, and reseal so the surface is protected through the next season. On aircraft in icing country this is scheduled work, not an add-on.

Common questions

Answers before you ask

How often should de-ice boots be cleaned and sealed?

At minimum once at the end of the icing season, so residue does not sit on the material through the summer. Aircraft flown heavily in icing conditions benefit from more.

Why do boots crack early?

Almost always because they have been cleaned with chemistry meant for paint, or because de-ice fluid residue was left in place. Both dry the material out.
