Aircraft brightwork polishing
Brightwork is the first thing anyone notices and the first thing to go. It is bare metal, which means it is oxidizing continuously, and once it is neglected past a point, bringing it back costs several times what maintaining it would have.
Detail
Bringing it back
Restoring neglected brightwork is a staged process working through progressively finer compounds until the surface is uniform. It takes time and it cannot be rushed, because the shortcut is a more aggressive compound and that leaves a surface that oxidizes faster than the one you started with.
Keeping it there
Maintained brightwork stays bright with a fraction of the effort. This is the single clearest example of why a scheduled program costs less than reactive work.
Exhaust stacks and leading edges
Exhaust areas carry the heaviest deposits on the airframe and are worked with that in mind. Polished leading edges are maintained without disturbing what sits behind them.

Common questions
Answers before you ask
How often does brightwork need polishing?
On a maintained aircraft, on a regular interval as part of a scheduled program. On a neglected one, a full restoration first, and then an interval. The restoration is the expensive part and the interval is what prevents it recurring.
Can badly oxidized brightwork be brought back?
Usually, yes. It is a staged process and it takes time. What cannot be undone is pitting, which is corrosion rather than oxidation.
