What Teterboro does to an aircraft

Teterboro is a harder environment on a finish than its reputation suggests.

Winter is the main event. From roughly November through March the aircraft based here live with de-icing fluid, road salt carried onto the ramp, and freeze-thaw cycling. Glycol residue is alkaline and it does not simply evaporate off a finish. It sits in seams, around fasteners and along the belly. De-ice boots take the worst of it. They are elastomeric, they are worked hard here, and they harden and crack early when they are cleaned with the chemistry used on paint. Boot care at this field is not an add-on, it is maintenance.

The atmosphere is industrial. Teterboro sits in the Meadowlands with the Turnpike corridor on three sides. Airborne particulate and hydrocarbon fallout settle on horizontal surfaces continuously, and on a light-colored aircraft the difference between a two week and a six week interval is visible from the door.

The ramp is busy and tight. High movement density means more ground handling, more towing and more opportunity for the kind of contact damage nobody reports. Our crews look for it and tell you what they find, because the alternative is that you discover it at the next inspection and nobody knows when it happened.

Utilization is high and dwell time is short. Aircraft based at Teterboro fly. The work has to fit between legs or overnight, which is why the scheduling below matters more here than at a quieter field.

Access and how we work here

Teterboro is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Our team members carry the required airport identification and work under the FBO's ramp procedures.

The curfew shapes everything. Teterboro operates a voluntary curfew between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM, which concentrates departures into the early morning. In practice the cabin work happens overnight, before the curfew lifts, so the aircraft is ready when the crew arrives rather than being worked around them.

Quick turns. Between legs we work to the time available and tell you honestly what fits in it. A forty minute turn is a cabin reset, not a detail, and we will say so rather than doing a fast version of the wrong thing.

Aircraft we work at this field

Teterboro's weight limit generally prohibits aircraft over 100,000 pounds, which shapes the based and transient fleet toward mid-size, super-mid and large cabin business jets. Gulfstream, Global, Falcon, Challenger, Citation, Praetor and Phenom are routine here.

Common questions

Teterboro, NJ, answered

Do you provide aircraft detailing at Teterboro Airport?

Yes. The Allen Groupe covers Teterboro with interior and exterior detailing, brightwork, de-ice boot service, disinfection, quick turns and AOG response.

Can you work overnight at Teterboro?

Yes, and most full interior and exterior work at this field is done overnight. Teterboro's voluntary curfew between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM concentrates departures into the early morning, so the work is scheduled to be finished before the crew arrives.

How often should an aircraft based at Teterboro be washed?

More often than one based somewhere dry and clean. Between the industrial atmosphere of the Meadowlands corridor and the winter combination of de-ice fluid and road salt, the interval here is usually shorter than an owner expects. We build the schedule around the aircraft and how it is flown rather than quoting a number.

Do you service de-ice boots at Teterboro?

Yes, and at this field it matters. Boots are elastomeric and they fail early when cleaned with chemistry meant for paint. Teterboro works them hard for four to five months a year.

What other airports do you cover from Teterboro?

Westchester County (HPN) is covered by the same operation. Philadelphia (PHL) and Lehigh Valley (ABE) are covered from our Pennsylvania base. We travel anywhere else in the country.

Are you insured to work on the ramp at Teterboro?

Yes. General liability, hangarkeepers and commercial auto. A certificate is available on request.
