What East Tennessee does to an aircraft
The valley holds everything. Knoxville sits in the Tennessee Valley between the Cumberland Plateau and the Smokies, and the terrain traps humidity and airborne particulate rather than letting it move through. Summer humidity here is persistent, and persistent moisture on a surface that is already carrying particulate is how a film becomes bonded rather than loose.
Spring pollen is genuinely severe. East Tennessee has one of the heaviest tree pollen loads in the country, and it runs for weeks. Pollen is acidic, it lands on every horizontal surface, and it does not simply blow off. An aircraft that sits through a Knoxville April without attention will show it.
Winter brings a real de-ice season. Not a northeast winter, but enough to matter, and de-icing fluid residue behaves the same way here as it does anywhere. Boots need the same attention they need further north.
