Belly and exhaust staining, what causes it and what takes it off safely

Exhaust deposit is acidic, it lands hot, and by the time anybody looks at it, it is bonded rather than sitting on top. The products that take it off fastest are the ones that take the finish with it, and that trade is made on ramps every day by people who are behind schedule.

Belly and exhaust work is the clearest example on an aircraft of why time is the variable a professional operation spends.

What the deposit actually is

Turbine exhaust deposit is mostly unburned carbon and partially combusted hydrocarbons, with sulfur compounds from the fuel. Those sulfur compounds combined with moisture give you an acidic film, and the whole mixture lands on a surface that is hot, which drives it into the microtexture of the coating rather than leaving it sitting on the surface.

Belly soil is a related but different problem. It is exhaust deposit plus hydraulic fluid, plus engine oil, plus everything the tires picked up off the ramp and threw at the underside, plus brake dust. It is heavier, greasier and it has been baked on by ground heat.

Both of them share a property that matters: they are not water soluble. Flooding does not touch them. That is why the temptation to escalate is so strong.

The three ways people go wrong

Escalating the chemical

The straightest line from a dirty belly to a clean one is a strong alkaline degreaser at a strong dilution. It works. It also does not stay where you put it.

Runoff goes down and aft, which on the belly means it reaches the gear well, the gear door hinges, the tires, and whatever unpainted or plated hardware is down there. Alkalinity that is fine on a painted skin is not fine on polished aluminum, and it is not fine on a de-ice boot on a leading edge if the product carries in the wind.

And the residue is the real risk. ASTM F1110, sandwich corrosion, exists precisely because a chemical trapped between faying surfaces behaves differently from one on an open panel. A strong cleaner that gets into a lap joint on the belly and does not get fully rinsed out is doing something you will not see for years.

Escalating the agitation

Scrubbing pads, aggressive brushes and high pressure at close range. All three remove deposit. All three remove topcoat, and on a belly this is compounded because the belly often has thinner or more worn paint to begin with, and because nobody inspects it in good light.

Escalating the temperature

Hot water and heated chemical accelerate everything, including the reactions with the substrate you did not want accelerated. Temperature is capped by the substrate, not by what would be convenient.

What actually works

The honest answer is dwell and repetition, which is slower and less satisfying and does not damage anything.

  1. Pre-rinse to get the loose material off so the chemical is working on the deposit rather than on ramp dust.
  2. Apply at the correct dilution and let it work. Dwell time is the entire mechanism. The product needs to solubilize the hydrocarbon film, and that takes minutes, not seconds. Keep it wet while it does; a degreaser drying on a surface concentrates and stops being the product you tested.
  3. Agitate with the softest thing that works. Usually a soft brush or wash media with a lot of solution, not a pad.
  4. Repeat rather than escalate. Two passes at the correct dilution beat one pass at double strength every single time, and it is the difference between a belly that is clean and a belly that is clean and thinner.
  5. Rinse comprehensively, then rinse the joints and the gear well again. This is the step that gets shortened and it is the one that matters most.
  6. Dry it, and check drains.

Where deposit has been left for a long time and is genuinely bonded into the coating, the choice is between accepting some staining and correcting it. Correcting removes topcoat, so on an aft fuselage that has years of accumulation this is a judgment rather than an automatic. Sometimes the right answer is that the aircraft carries a slight shadow aft of the exhaust and keeps its film thickness. We will tell you that rather than sell you the correction.

Why frequency beats intensity here

Fresh deposit comes off with mild chemistry and short dwell. Deposit that has been through six weeks of heat cycles does not. So the operator who has the belly done regularly is buying an easier, gentler job each time, and the operator who waits until it looks bad is buying the aggressive version.

This is the clearest case on an aircraft where a maintenance interval is cheaper than a recovery, and it is the reason belly work is a standing item in the scheduled programs rather than something we wait to be asked about.

One thing worth knowing if you run maintenance

A clean belly is an inspectable belly. Hydraulic weeps, fuel seeps and fluid tracking are visible on clean paint and invisible under carbon. Several times a year our crews are the reason somebody finds a leak, not because we were looking for it but because it was suddenly the only thing on an otherwise clean surface.

That is worth more to an MRO than the appearance is, and it is a real argument for doing the belly on schedule rather than before a trip.
